Don’t Commute: 5 Reasons You Should Bike to Work Instead

If you work in a busy city, you must be well aware of the troubles of commuting to work on a daily basis. The roads are too congested which results in you spending a lot of time in your car doing nothing.

The public transit is too crowded, so even though you are free to do whatever you want, you don’t really have the room to do as you wish. And if you are walking to work, well, you are one lucky person to even have ‘walking to work’ as an option.

If you don’t belong to that group of lucky people, you may, at some point in time, have considered the option of riding a bike to work. If you have, but did not act on it, we understand! There are too many variables to consider, and too many roadblocks (sometimes literally), in picking up the habit. If you are looking for some motivation to really do it, you have come to the right place. Below, we discuss some of the reasons why everyone who can bike to work, should bike to work!

1. Health

Let’s get the most obvious one out of the way to start with. The health benefits of exercising regularly is not something you need more information about. The health benefits of regular biking includes everything from a healthy heart to glowing skin. But with biking to work, you are literally using the time of your day for two purposes – to travel to work and to get some exercise. Now if that is not a win-win situation, what is? Keep in mind that you don’t really need to be in great shape to start riding to work. The only difference between an unfit and a fit person riding to work is the possibility of the fit person reaching there in lesser time.

2. Happiness

Riding to work on a daily basis can make you happy due to various reasons. The most obvious one being that the daily exercise will release more of the chemicals responsible for the feeling of happiness. The exercise will also make sure that you sleep better, so you end up waking happy. And then there is the happiness of seeing everyone else stuck in traffic while you zip past them on your two wheels.

3. Fresh air

The biggest downside to traveling in a car or public transport, and the most underrated one, is the lack of fresh air available for you to breathe in. Fresh air is very important for maintaining the healthy state of your vital organs. It also energizes you, which is something that every working professional will appreciate, especially just before starting work in the morning.

4. Savings

The investment you will make in a bike is negligible compared to the one you will have to make in your car. Compare the annual cost of taking the public transport daily and you will soon realize how much cheaper it is to ride to work than all the other options available to you. Riding to work will either save your transit cost, of the cost of buying the car, gas and the maintenance of the vehicle too. Plus, by riding twice a day, you can save on that expensive gym membership too. And thanks to all the exercise, you will end up spending less on your health issues as well.

5. Fun

The last but equally important reason to bike to work daily is that it is fun. You always have the option of taking different routes and exploring different parts of the city as opposed to taking the same route every day.
