Gotta Love Those Eyelash Extensions: 8 Highly Recommended Beauty Tips

Eyelash extensions are not for every woman, but they’re amazing and are worn by celebrities including:

  • Kim Kardashian
  • Kylie Jenner
  • Beyonce
  • Katy Perry
  • Jennifer Lopez

Wearing eyelash extensions can be perfect for a low maintenance person. Even on days where you can’t be bothered to or don’t have time to put on makeup, your eyes look coated in mascara and faintly lined.

They can make you feel a little more confident when you walk out the door in the morning. And after all, that’s probably why you decide to have any beauty treatment.

What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions are used to increase the length, fullness and thickness of your natural eyelashes. They may be made from different materials including silk, mink and synthetic or human hair.

Eyelash extensions are waterproof and give the appearance of wearing mascara without the messiness and smudges of makeup. You can choose the length, curl and type of material for your extensions.

Tip #1: Types of lashes

Although both false eyelashes and eyelash extensions enhance the length of eyelashes, they are not the same. They are called temporary false lashes and semi-permanent lashes, respectively.

Semi-permanent lashes, also known as individual eyelash extensions, are eyelashes applied with an adhesive which is usually cyanoacrylate.  It is designed for use around the eyes but can cause skin irritation.

Tip #2: Customized designs

There are many types, lengths, colors, curves and thicknesses, of eyelash extensions, from natural looking, to glamorous and dramatic. They come in every imaginable color.

A good technician will study your natural lashes before deciding on a design that will be the most flattering. First, of course, she’ll ask you what type of eyelash extensions you’re looking for.

Tip #3: How eyelash extensions are applied

The usual method of applying extensions is gluing them to your eyelashes one by one so the lashes don’t stick together. Usually a single lash is applied to each natural lash. When this is done properly, neither the extension lash nor the glue touch your eyelid. It can take one to two hours to attach a full, new set. Eyelash extensions last around three to four weeks after which they start falling out naturally.

So maintaining a full set of lashes requires refill service about every three to four weeks. In the meantime, be careful not to get water on your lashes and don’t use oily products near your eyes.

Tip #4: Cost of services

The cost varies based on the services involved. The cost may depend on the number of lashes, the skill of the technician, and where the extensions are applied.

Tip #5: A comfortable process

You lie down on a table and close your eyes for an hour and a half while soft music plays in the background and a technician attaches extensions to your lashes.

It’s a lot like taking a nap for a working adult. And believe it or not, most salons offer a free massage while you’re on the table.

Tip #6: Wearing makeup with extensions

Only liquid-based eye products are damaging to extensions, but you can use a tiny drop of liquid liner if you don’t drag it along the lash line. Carefully remove shadow or liner with oil-free makeup remover and Q-tips. Don’t use mascara because it leaves extensions crusty and damaged.

Tip #7: Extension removal

Don’t pull out extensions by yourself. This may be very painful and leave you with no natural eyelashes. Go back to the cosmetician who applied them. Having the extensions removed is as easy as having them put on.

Tip #8: Lash artist titles

Professionals trained in lash artistry have various titles including lash technicians, lash artist, and lash stylist.
