What makes a company a great place to work

Filed under: About Life & Everything, English, Living in Vancouver, BC — Lucian Savluc @ 12:46 pm

Care. That is the answer.

Care for his employees, for the community, for the environment, for all these “little” things that goes beside doing only revenue and pure profit.

A week ago, suddenly, Bill (Navarik founder) went outside his office and said he has to announce something. I was thinking perhaps about the future plans and so on. But no, he stopped and pointed to Shayna, our office manager who was coming with two big green boxes directly to the desk where Yiting and I was standing.
To make it short: each of use got a nice - Canadian branded - hoodie and a small box of (Canadian) donuts :) And the the colleagues sang us “O Canada!” the anthem.

It was unexpected, I was impressed.

Yiting and Lucian

I have more than 4 years here, and I still continue to discover this things I used to forget: not the places matter, but the people who are living there. And companies are the same.

I am so happy to read the news posted on the official European Union “Open Source Observatory” website: Adina Riposan (who had a speech at eLiberatica this year) and her team finally get attention.

“Romanian public libraries can now use an Open Source library system for managing book loans and reservations, searching catalogues, managing library assets, maintaining a website and general administration.”

eLiberatica 2008 - it will happen again

Filed under: About Life & Everything, English, News & Bolts, eLiberatica & ROSI — Lucian Savluc @ 4:51 pm

There is no doubt now, we are going to have another eLiberatica in Romania for the next year. The new web site was launched!

I’m very happy we get it online. Even we still have to add a few section (Speakers & Schedule, Hotel & Travel, Registration, Call for Papers, Media Center, Help to Promote eLiberatica, Sponsorship & Sponsors, Credits & Supporters), you can already get a good idea what we are preparing for 2008.
On short, the conference will take place in May 2008, in Bucharest. We decided that the Romanian capital city would give us the most exposure, starting with the business sector, universities, specialists, and finishing with the government.

This second edition will be focused in special on the business aspects or how you can get profits, save money and also help the community by using Open and Free Technologies.

We have a long list of personalities we wish to invite; with some of them we already started to discuss about their participation at eLiberatica 2008: Tim O’Reilly (O’Reilly Media, Inc., founder and CEO), Ivan Krstic (OLPC, software architect and researcher), Barbara Held (IDABC. European eGoverments Services), Rasmus Lerdorf (the father of PHP), Constantin Teodorescu (Secretary of State - Romanian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology) and much more.

I invite all who are interested to check the new eLiberatica 2008 website at http://www.eliberatica.ro/2008

More information will be published there soon.

We  would appreciate any feedback you send us about the conference, topics, speakers and the website. For this you can use this blog to post comments or you can contact me directly at lucian.savluc@eliberatica.ro.

We are trying to set up a event at least at the same high quality we had last year at Brasov and you are totally welcomed to participate in helping us to understand your needs and wishes.

Un nou articol despre Open Source in presa romana

Filed under: News & Bolts, Romanian, eLiberatica & ROSI — Lucian Savluc @ 4:47 pm

Articolul a fost publicat in cotidinaul Gandul.

Aici gasiti linkul: Open Source - gratuite si legale.

(Si ca nouatate, la sfarsitul acestei saptamani ne pregatim de lansarea sitului eLiberatica 2008 ;)
