So, what is GeoKeo?

Filed under: English, News & Bolts — Lucian Savluc @ 11:04 am

A few months ago, I was happy to blog about Ben Nolan, one of my former colleagues at Sxip. From his projects one of the most interesting was ZoomIn.

On that time, I was asking myself if nobody is going to try something similar in Romania, a country with 22 millions of inhabitants.

Now, Alex Brie, one of the ROSI group members, bright guy and young entrepreneur :) is trying something for Romania too.

The name of the project is GeoKeo, it has a blog and can be tested at http://geokeo.com.
GeoKeo is in alpha state now, but you can try it and have an idea about what is going to be.

So, what is GeoKeo?

Short answer: GeoKeo is an incubating search engine, the first online geo-local search with the most accurate digital map for Bucharest, Romania and soon the rest of the country.

Longer answer: a startup developing the local search engine of choice for the 5 millions Romanian Internet users, displaying addresses and useful objectives in Romania and providing geolocalized targeted information or marketing services.

GeoKeo - an incubating search engine for Romania

Probably would be interesting to hear form you what kind of technology you are using for this project and some of your future plans.

Good luck!

  1. Thanks, Lucian.
The site is being developed using Ruby on Rails(and a couple of extra plugins for future functions), though the toughest bit is the Javascript for the user-side interaction.
I am cooking some pretty functions like adding your own locations on the map, taggable and shareable, as well as a name change for the Romanian version of website(the one I’ll eventually direct all my efforts into).
Future plans? Well, for now it’s mainly a hobby-site. I hope eventually the site will get used by plenty of people; only then will I be able to cook up a business plan.

  2. Hi Alex,

The plan sounds good. Of course you need promotion so the people will start to use it.

Perhaps you would like to check with Stefan Petre, he developed a very interesting JavaScript library on http://interface.eyecon.ro/ and he is a really nice and helpful guy besides the fact that is a brilliant developer.

    Success and keep going!

  4. Hi Ben, long time no see. Glad to hear news from you!
Yes, next year I’ll be in Romania, in Brasov for eLiberatica conference.
This is going to happen in May.

Where in Europe you are going to stay? It would be great to see you at eLiberatica. Perhaps you can even give a talk there (there will be an academic section) - in Romania are a lot of AJAX, PHP and Ruby fans :)
