Rasnov Citadel

Filed under: About Life & Everything, English, Romanian Places — Lucian Savluc @ 4:39 pm

I promised to myself when I’ll have time to post some of the pictures taken in my vacation in Romania.
I hope that my Canadian friends will have the chance to discover themselves the mystical beauty of these places.

I’ll start with one of the dearest places to me, Rasnov , my hometown.
I uploaded some photos with Rasnov citadel on my vacation Flickr set.

Some things that you don’t know about Rasnov citadel (”Cetatea Rasnov” in Romanian) is that a few years ago, an Italian entrepreneur take it in concession for 50 years. He done a great job there, rebuilding it, so right now it looks almost identical how it was hundreds of years ago.
You can visit the halls and dungeons, you can look at ancient weapons, throw a coin in the citadel fountain (143 meters deep, where the legend says it took more than 15 years to dig), take a look on the beautiful surrounding landscape and finally, you can rest for a cold beer on the rustic patio that is inside the citadel inner court.
When I was a kid, we use to spend days in between those old walls and ruins. I remember how fascinating was. And still remains.

By the way, the citadel was used in many movies. “Nemuritorii” (”The Immortals”) for example, who has one of the best soundtrack for a Romanian film made before 1989 signed by Phoenix, a legendary Romanian band of the ’70s.

Also, in Rasnov county was shot Cold Mountain a few years ago.
So if you wonder where are located that breathtaking landscapes, now you know.

  1. Hi there,

I actually just visited Rasnov this summer as well, and I was fascinated by it. And you’re right, it is in great shape. It’s one of my favorite sites, one that I haven’t visited before. I’m Romanian, and very proud of it (also live in Canada). Cheers!

  2. Hi Larisa,

Thanks for the post. I’m happy to see that are still people like you.
With Rasnov Citadel, I intended to work on a website which will present it, but right now the time is not permitting me. Anyway, I think that it deserves to be known by the westerns. It is really a beautiful place there.

    Cheers,
    Lucian

  4. Hi Alex, I think you should check these two pages where I did a good coverage; you will find there lots of useful information, links and images.

  5. I watched a program about ghosthunters last evening just because they were at the Citadel Rasnov in Romania. I find the country of Romania and others in central Europe fascinating-love the history, architecture, etc. However I think the subject of ghosts is total bunk.I’m curious to know your opinion on the matter? Compliments to you-great pics of a beautiful country!!!! Thanks so much for posting them.

  6. What can I say Kelly… Some people believe that is something beyond our cognitive senses; I never met in person any ghost in all my childhood when I played there, but we imagined a lot of things like that ;)
The place has its magic for sure. Just stay to catch the dusk or dawn there.

I plan to build a dedicated website about that region, let’s hope the time will permit.

Thank you for your nice words.

  7. Hello Lucian!

I’ve just recently learned of Citadel Rasnov by watching an episode of the American TV show, ‘Ghost Hunters Internation’ on the SCI-FI network. I was so curious about it I’ve looking online for more information. There’s a video stream of the show on the network’s site http://www.scifi.com/ The episode is ‘Fortress of Fear’. Great site, thanks for sharing

  9. Groups like Ghost Hunters do not necessarly bend the public will but they can prick it’s imagination.

What about my ancestors? Where did they come from? Forget the stoies of free-floating entities, I want to find who is in my past and can’t speak about who I am.
